Amazon Prime Video said its investigative thriller ‘Raakh’ has become its No.1 non-English series worldwide for the second consecutive week, emerging as the platform’s biggest Indian Original debut in the last two years within two weeks of launch.
The eight-episode crime drama, which premiered globally on June 12, trended at No.1 in 23 countries and entered the Top 10 in 60 countries, underscoring its international appeal, Prime Video has said in a statement.
Produced by Endemol Shine India in association with BhaDiPa, the series explores themes of morality, crime, justice and grief.
“The response to ‘Raakh’ has been truly extraordinary,” said Nikhil Madhok, Director and Head of Originals, Prime Video India.
He said the series had evolved from a compelling pitch by creators Anusha Nandakumar and Sandeep Saket into a “powerful and emotionally resonant story”, adding that it was “incredibly gratifying” to see it emerge as Prime Video’s No.1 non-English series worldwide and become its most-watched new Indian Original in the last two years within just two weeks of launch.
Madhok said the success of the series reinforced Prime Video’s belief in backing authentic stories and talented creators. He added that audiences had connected deeply with the emotions of the show, particularly its final episode, helping it resonate across geographies.
Prosit Roy, Director and Executive Producer of ‘Raakh’, in a statement said the creative team had set out to tell a story that examined “the spaces between justice and grief” and did not shy away from the weight of tragedy.
“To see this story resonate so profoundly, not just in India but across the world, is humbling,” Roy said, adding that the show’s rise as Prime Video’s No.1 non-English series worldwide reflected the emotional connection audiences forged with its characters.
Creators, writers and co-directors Nandakumar and Saket said the series was built through years of effort focused on creating authentic characters and a lived-in world.
They said the audience response was “the greatest validation” for the craft invested in the project and credited Prime Video for backing the story from its earliest stages.
Endemol’s Rishi Negi, Producer of ‘Raakh’, said the success of the series validated Endemol Shine India’s strategy of supporting distinctive and emotionally resonant stories.
The series stars Sonali Bendre, Ali Fazal and Aamir Bashir in lead roles and is available on Prime Video in India and more than 240 countries and territories.
