Prime Video has announced June 12 as the exclusive worldwide streaming premiere date for ‘Karuppu’, the Tamil fantasy action drama that emerged as the biggest Tamil box-office blockbuster of the year. Following its successful theatrical run, the film will be available to stream across India and in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
Directed by RJ Balaji and produced by S R Prakashbabu and S R Prabhu under the banner of Dream Warrior Pictures, ‘Karuppu’ stars Suriya in the lead role alongside RJ Balaji, Trisha Krishnan and Indrans. The film features music composed by Sai Abhyankkar.
The announcement was made by Prime Video on Monday, confirming that the film will be available in its original Tamil version as well as dubbed versions in Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada. The Telugu version will stream under the title ‘Veerabhadrudu’.
Blending mythology, action and courtroom drama, ‘Karuppu’ follows guardian deity Vettai Karuppu, who takes human form as a lawyer to challenge corruption within a legal system that exploits ordinary citizens. The film’s unique storyline, coupled with high-octane action sequences and strong performances, helped it register a record-breaking theatrical run.
Speaking about the film’s digital debut, Manish Menghani, Director and Head of Content Licensing at Prime Video India, said rooted stories with strong cultural themes continue to resonate with audiences. He noted that ‘Karuppu’ further strengthens Prime Video’s long-standing association with Suriya, whose acclaimed films such as ‘Jai Bhim’ and ‘Soorarai Pottru’ have found a strong audience on the platform.
Menghani said the film combines larger-than-life storytelling, action and powerful performances, adding that Prime Video expects the title to entertain and engage audiences globally when it premieres on June 12.
Producer S R Prabhu described ‘Karuppu’ as a film that balances commercial entertainment with meaningful storytelling. According to him, the blend of mythology, courtroom drama, action and contemporary social themes gives the film a distinctive identity. He expressed confidence that the film would replicate its theatrical success on streaming with Prime Video’s extensive global reach.
Actor Suriya thanked audiences for the overwhelming response the film received in cinemas and said he was looking forward to sharing the story with viewers worldwide through its OTT release. He added that the continued appreciation for the film has been humbling and expressed excitement about its upcoming streaming premiere.
The release also forms part of Prime Video’s blockbuster entertainment slate ahead of Amazon Prime Day in India. As the platform prepares for the tenth edition of Prime Day this July, ‘Karuppu’ is expected to be one of its biggest regional content offerings of the season.
With its mix of mythology, social commentary and action-packed storytelling, ‘Karuppu’ is now set to reach a wider global audience when it begins streaming exclusively on Prime Video from June 12.
