Netflix is set to bring the Broadway production of ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ to screens, expanding the popular sci-fi franchise beyond television. The streaming platform is currently filming the stage play for a future release, allowing global audiences to experience the theatrical prequel of the ‘Stranger Things’ universe.
According to a UNI report, the filmed version will capture the show’s original Broadway company during its ongoing run. To accommodate the production, Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions cancelled performances from February 10 to February 14, with regular shows scheduled to resume on February 15. The streaming giant has not yet announced a release date for the recorded version.
The Broadway cast is led by Tony Award nominee Louis McCartney, who reprises his role as Henry Creel after originating the character in the West End production in London. A new ensemble is expected to take over in late March, with Victor de Paula Rocha stepping into the role of Henry Creel. The cast also includes Ayana Cymone as Patty Newby, Shea Grant as Joyce Maldonado, Juan Carlos as Bob Newby and Matthew Erick White as James Hopper Jr.
‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ opened at the Marquis Theatre on April 22, 2025, following its debut in London’s West End in December 2023. Written by Kate Trefry and based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Trefry, the play serves as a standalone prequel rooted in the mythology of the hit Netflix series.
Set in Hawkins in 1959, the story centres on teenage Henry Creel, whose family moves to the town seeking a fresh start. As a series of mysterious events begin to unfold, Henry is forced to confront the disturbing possibility that he may be connected to the darkness spreading around him. The narrative explores the early lives of familiar characters while establishing links to the broader storyline of the series, including its upcoming fifth and final season.
Directed by Stephen Daldry and co-directed by Justin Martin, the large-scale production features a 34-member cast and elaborate stagecraft that blends practical effects with cinematic techniques. The Duffer Brothers serve as creative producers, while Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment is associated with the project as associate producer.
Netflix had earlier documented the making of the stage production in ‘Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow’, released in April 2025. With filming now underway at the Marquis Theatre, the Broadway chapter of ‘Stranger Things’ is poised to reach a wider audience, offering fans an opportunity to experience the theatrical prequel on screen.
