Kevin Vaz, Chief Executive Officer–Entertainment at JioStar, has been appointed the new President of the Indian Digital Media Industry Foundation (IDMIF), a pivotal body under the Indian Broadcasting & Digital Foundation (IBDF).
The announcement was made following the IDMIF Board of Directors meeting held on July 30, according to a media statement from JioStar.
Vaz takes over from K. Madhavan, under whose leadership IDMIF grew into a prominent voice for India’s digital media sector. A seasoned media executive with nearly three decades of experience, Vaz is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in India’s entertainment industry. His leadership at JioStar has been marked by strong content innovation and digital transformation across platforms.
Vaz said, “I am honoured to take on this responsibility and build upon the strong foundation laid by Madhavan. As we move into 2025–26, my focus will be on fostering fair competition, innovation and sustainable growth across India’s digital media landscape.”
He further noted that digital continues to be a transformative pillar of India’s media ecosystem. “With the right policy push and collaborative efforts, we have an incredible opportunity to further innovate, empower creators and enhance audience experiences,” he added.
IDMIF, since its inception in 2021, has been actively working to promote ethical content creation and regulatory stability. Its flagship content regulation body — the Digital Media Content Regulatory Council (DMCRC) — was established on May 31, 2021, under the IT Rules, 2021. The DMCRC is registered with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and serves as an independent self-regulatory body for non-news content aired by IDMIF member platforms.
The DMCRC is chaired by Justice Mukul Mudgal (Retd.) and comprises eminent voices from India’s creative community, including filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, director Nikkhil Advani, Banijay Asia CEO Deepak Dhar and veteran storyteller Tigmanshu Dhulia. The Council also includes platform representatives like Anil Lale (JioHotstar) and Ritesh Khosla (SonyLIV), ensuring a diverse, balanced approach to content governance.
The regulatory body is modelled on IBDF’s respected Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), earlier chaired by Justice Mudgal as well. The BCCC has often been praised by the Indian judiciary for its effectiveness in self-regulation, a standard the DMCRC seeks to uphold in the digital space.
Founded in 2021, IDMIF represents major OTT platforms including JioHotstar, SonyLIV, SunNXT, Zee5, Discovery+, Crunchyroll, FanCode, YuppTV, Manorama Max and Sony Pictures Stream. The foundation is committed to creating a conducive environment for innovation, self-regulation, and responsible content creation, working closely with policy makers and creators alike.
