Meta’s reply to the government notice regarding alleged Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) advertisements on Instagram has been received by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and is currently under examination, IT Secretary S Krishnan said on today.
Krishnan said that the government will review Meta’s response in detail and take appropriate action after completing the examination process.The development comes after the government issued a notice to Meta over concerns related to Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) being promoted through paid advertisements on Instagram.
According to an PTI report New Delhi, the ministry had raised serious concerns over the presence of such harmful content and sought an explanation from the company. MeitY had directed Instagram to immediately disable advertisements and content that promote, facilitate, or provide access to CSEAM.
The ministry also asked Meta to provide a detailed response within a specified deadline, explaining the steps being taken by the platform to prevent such content.The government’s action followed concerns over the misuse of digital platforms for spreading illegal and harmful material involving children.
Under India’s IT rules, social media platforms are required to take measures to prevent unlawful content and ensure user safety.Meta, which owns Instagram, has submitted its response to the ministry, outlining its position and the steps taken by the company to address child safety concerns on its platforms.
