Amazon MGM Studios has officially tapped Denis Villeneuve to direct the next installment in the iconic James Bond franchise, signaling a bold new direction for the beloved spy saga. The studio confirmed the appointment on Wednesday, also announcing that Tanya Lapointe will serve as executive producer, while Amy Pascal and David Heyman, as previously revealed, remain on board as producers.
As per an Amazon MGM Studios press release, Villeneuve expressed his lifelong passion for the Bond universe. “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007,” said the acclaimed filmmaker. “I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.”
Villeneuve’s appointment marks a significant moment in the evolution of the James Bond legacy. Known for his cinematic flair and visionary storytelling, the French-Canadian director is revered for works such as ‘Blade Runner 2049’, ‘Arrival’, and the ‘Dune’ films, all of which have earned him critical acclaim and multiple Academy Award® nominations. His most recent release, Dune: Part Two, earned over $700 million globally and secured prestigious awards, reinforcing his standing as one of the foremost filmmakers of this era.
Mike Hopkins, Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, called Villeneuve’s hiring “an honor,” adding, “He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself… James Bond is in the hands of one of today’s greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007’s next adventure.”
Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman also shared their enthusiasm: “Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it’s ours too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.”
Villeneuve’s deep admiration for the franchise and track record with complex, high-stakes storytelling makes him a natural choice for steering the next chapter of 007. His blend of philosophical depth, visual grandeur, and emotional intensity has already transformed major franchises like Dune into cinematic landmarks.
In 2022, Amazon completed its acquisition of MGM, which includes a vast archive of over 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows. Earlier this year, in March 2025, Amazon MGM Studios entered into a new joint venture with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, granting the studio creative control of the James Bond intellectual property. With Villeneuve now onboard, the franchise appears poised for a reinvention that honors tradition while forging bold new ground.
As production details remain under wraps, all eyes are now on who will don the tuxedo next — and what cinematic landscape Villeneuve will craft for the most famous spy in film history.
