Aamir Khan’s iconic period sports drama ‘Lagaan’ will continue its successful theatrical re-release run until June 18, following strong audience response across cinemas. The extension comes as fans continue to revisit the Oscar-nominated classic on the big screen as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations.
The film was re-released on June 12 to commemorate 25 years since its original release and was initially scheduled to run in theatres until June 14. However, owing to popular demand from moviegoers and cinema exhibitors, the makers have decided to extend the screenings for an additional four days.
Released on June 15, 2001, ‘Lagaan’ remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and headlined by Aamir Khan, the film combined sports, drama and patriotism against the backdrop of British-ruled India. The story follows a group of villagers who challenge British officers to a game of cricket in a bid to escape oppressive taxation.
Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the film received widespread critical acclaim upon release and went on to earn an Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category, making it one of the few Indian films to achieve the distinction.
Over the years, ‘Lagaan’ has continued to enjoy a devoted fan following, with its memorable performances, music by A. R. Rahman, and inspiring narrative cementing its place in Indian cinema history.
The extended theatrical run offers both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers another opportunity to experience the landmark film on the big screen, 25 years after it first captivated audiences worldwide.
