Prime Video has released the trailer for its new anime adaptation of ‘Ghost in the Shell’ and announced yesterday that the series will debut globally on July 7, 2026, in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. The new television series is produced by award-winning animation studio Science SARU and is based on the iconic manga franchise first published in 1989.
The streaming platform said the new series follows full-body cyborg Motoko Kusanagi and her team as they combat cybercrime in a near-future world shaped by advanced cyberbrain and cyborg technologies. The story centres on the formation of Public Security Section 9, also known as Shell Squad, as it tackles complex cybercrimes and international conspiracies while investigating a mysterious hacker known as The Puppet Master.
According to Prime Video, the franchise has expanded significantly since the original manga by creator Masamune Shirow was released in 1989, spawning anime productions, including director Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 film, as well as a live-action Hollywood adaptation.
The company described the franchise as one that has had a major cultural impact and influenced creators worldwide.
