Bhubaneswar-based animation studio Ele Animations is set to bring the revered story of Lord Jagannath to cinema audiences with the theatrical release of its animated feature film ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’. The film marks a significant milestone in Indian animation and spiritual storytelling, as it prepares for a wide release across more than 300 screens nationwide.
According to a press release, ‘Mahaprabhu Jagannath’ is adapted from the studio’s popular television series Jay Jagannath, which has built a strong following among viewers through its depiction of the life, teachings and legacy associated with Lord Jagannath. The feature film aims to expand that narrative for the big screen while reaching audiences across multiple regions of the country.
The film will be released in Hindi, Odia and Telugu in association with multiplex chain Cinepolis, enabling a wider pan-India reach. By offering the story in multiple languages, the makers are seeking to connect with audiences beyond Odisha, where Lord Jagannath holds deep cultural and spiritual significance.
Billed as the first animated feature film dedicated to Lord Jagannath, the project represents a unique blend of mythology, devotion and modern animation. The film seeks to present one of India’s most celebrated spiritual traditions through a format that can appeal to both younger audiences and families, while preserving the essence of the revered deity’s legacy.
Beyond its theatrical release, Mahaprabhu Jagannath is also expected to serve as the foundation for a larger storytelling universe. The makers have outlined plans to build an interconnected franchise spanning films, television content, music and immersive experience destinations inspired by Indian spiritual and mythological narratives.
The move reflects a growing trend within India’s entertainment industry, where mythology-based stories are increasingly being explored through animation and franchise-led content ecosystems. With its focus on one of India’s most widely worshipped deities, the film is expected to attract both devotees and animation enthusiasts alike.
As anticipation builds ahead of its release, Mahaprabhu Jagannath is positioning itself as a landmark project in the Indian animation space, combining faith, culture and cinematic storytelling on a national scale.
