PVR INOX is set to bring back ‘Dev.D’ to the big screen on April 24, in association with Star Studios, reviving one of the most unconventional and influential films in modern Hindi cinema.
The announcement, shared via an Instagram post, has sparked excitement among cinephiles, with the cult classic returning to theatres years after it first redefined the narrative of love, heartbreak and self-destruction. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, ‘Dev.D’ broke away from the traditional retelling of Devdas, offering a raw, contemporary and unapologetically flawed portrayal of relationships in a rapidly evolving urban India.
Written by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, the film stripped away the romanticism associated with its source material and instead focused on deeply human, imperfect characters navigating desire, rebellion and emotional chaos. Featuring standout performances by Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Mahie Gill, the film resonated strongly with audiences seeking alternative storytelling in mainstream cinema.
At the heart of its enduring appeal is the groundbreaking music by Amit Trivedi, whose experimental soundtrack became a defining element of the film. Blending genres with bold creativity, the music not only complemented the narrative but elevated it, turning songs like ‘Emosanal Attyachaar’ and ‘Nayan Tarse’ into cult favourites.
Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX, described ‘Dev.D’ as a defining film that deserves to be experienced on the big screen, highlighting its immersive visuals, powerful storytelling and shared audience experience. Director Anurag Kashyap reflected on the film’s origins as an act of rebellion, aiming to challenge the romanticised image of ‘Devdas’ and present a more flawed, real and contemporary protagonist.
Actors associated with the film also shared personal memories. Kalki Koechlin recalled her early days on set, describing the experience as both nerve-wracking and liberating, while Abhay Deol spoke about the initial skepticism the project faced and how it ultimately became a personal milestone for him. Amit Trivedi, meanwhile, called the film a turning point in his career, crediting it for helping him find his musical voice.
With its bold narrative, striking visuals and unforgettable soundtrack, ‘Dev.D’ continues to hold a special place in Indian cinema. Its return to theatres offers both longtime fans and a new generation the chance to experience the film as it was meant to be seen—on the big screen, with all its raw energy and emotional intensity intact.
