Netflix orders ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ sequel, inks deal with director Maggie Kang

Netflix has ordered a sequel to its 2025 global hit ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ and signed an exclusive multiyear writing and directing deal with filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the streaming platform announced.

The sequel will mark the first project under Netflix’s new partnership with Kang and Appelhans, as the company expands its collaboration with the creative duo in the animation space. The original film, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, emerged as a major global success after its release on Netflix and built a strong fan following worldwide.

According to a PTI report from Los Angeles today, the sequel will continue the animated musical fantasy story that blends K-pop culture, action and Korean mythology.

Speaking about the project, Kang expressed pride in the film’s reception and the growing global interest in its story. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning,” she said.

Appelhans added that the characters and their universe hold a deeply personal connection for the filmmakers. “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together,” he said.

The story of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ revolves around three global K-pop stars — Rumi, Mira and Zoey — who perform as part of the internationally famous girl group HUNTR/X. Behind the glamour of their celebrity lives, the trio secretly lead double lives as demon hunters, using the power of music and teamwork to protect the world from supernatural threats.

In the film, the group confronts one of its biggest adversaries — a rival boy band known as Saja Boys, who are revealed to be demons in disguise. The narrative combines high-energy music performances with action-driven storytelling rooted in Korean folklore.

The film’s soundtrack also achieved major success, producing chart-topping tracks such as “Golden.” The movie has further strengthened its global recognition with nominations at the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

Commenting on the partnership, Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, said the platform was proud to deepen its collaboration with the filmmakers and Sony Pictures Animation.

“With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres,” Bajaria said, adding that the company looks forward to expanding the world created in the film.

The sequel is expected to build on the success of the original film while continuing Netflix’s push to develop globally appealing animated franchises that combine music, storytelling and culturally rooted narratives.
