With an aim to mark International Safer Internet Day on February 10, Dr. Garth Graham, Director and Global Head of YouTube Health, unveiled a set of practical guidelines aimed at helping families and teens navigate the online world more safely, underscoring three core strategies: setting customized digital boundaries, prioritizing age-appropriate content, and creating clear, supervised accounts for younger users.
These measures, Dr. Graham said in a blog yesterday, are intended to foster healthier, more secure interactions with online platforms, while reinforcing family engagement in digital wellbeing.
Dr. Graham emphasized that setting boundaries that reflect each family’s unique needs is foundational to online safety. YouTube now allows parents to tailor experiences across a range of environments — from YouTube Kids for younger children to supervised teen accounts — equipped with tools to limit time spent on Shorts and adjust content consumption.
Such controls, he noted, help parents maintain the “final say” on what’s appropriate for their children while encouraging responsible viewing habits.
Another key recommendation focuses on age-appropriate content settings. According to Dr. Graham, YouTube’s policies for younger audiences are significantly stricter to ensure recommended videos meet safety and quality standards. In supervised setups, parents can choose content settings aligned with specific age brackets, helping to ensure exploration stays within safe bounds.
The third pillar of YouTube’s Safer Internet Day guidance is the creation of clear, supervised accounts. Dr. Graham highlighted YouTube’s ‘Who’s Watching’ feature, which allows families to switch instantly between age-appropriate experiences and manage accounts through Family Center. This simplifies supervision and reinforces a secure starting point for kids and teens as they explore online content.
With youth increasingly engaged in digital spaces, YouTube’s Safer Internet Day initiative aims not only to protect younger users but also to encourage families to build a healthy relationship with technology that lasts a lifetime, Dr. Graham wrote. He called on parents and caregivers to leverage these tools and remain active participants in their children’s online journeys.
