In a major boost to its growing IP-led consumer products business, Sony YAY! has acquired the master licensing rights for the legendary animated series ‘Swat Kats’ in India. The strategic move marks a significant milestone for the kids’ entertainment channel as it expands its licensing and merchandising (L&M) footprint with iconic, legacy brands that carry intergenerational appeal.
Originally aired in the early 1990s, ‘Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron’ is considered one of the most loved action-animation titles of its time. With a futuristic plotline, stylized aerial sequences, and tech-savvy protagonists, the show captured the imagination of children and teenagers globally — a trend that has persisted over decades through reruns, digital fandom, and nostalgia-fuelled content consumption, the channel said in a press statement.
With this acquisition, Sony YAY! becomes the exclusive master licensee for Swat Kats in India, gaining rights to sublicense across key consumer product categories such as apparel, school supplies, toys, games, digital offerings, and live events. The brand plans to drive fan engagement through a curated mix of high-quality, locally resonant products and retail tie-ups. This strategy is aligned with the channel’s vision to create 360-degree IP ecosystems and build long-term consumer affinity.
Sujoy Roy Bardhan, Head – Marketing, OAP, Licensing & Merchandising, Sony YAY!, shared his excitement,“At Sony YAY!, we have always endeavoured to serve Indian audiences with the best in kids’ entertainment by bringing iconic IPs to life. Swat Kats is a legacy property with deep cultural resonance and cross-generational appeal. Its addition to our portfolio allows us to craft meaningful product strategies and immersive consumer experiences. Our focus is on preserving the core essence of the franchise while making it relevant and compelling for today’s audiences.”
The acquisition is also a strong endorsement of Sony YAY!’s evolving portfolio. The channel, part of Culver Max Entertainment (formerly Sony Pictures Networks India), has built a vibrant L&M business featuring global hits like Naruto and Shinchan, as well as homegrown successes such as Honey Bunny and Kicko and Super Speedo. These properties have been successfully extended across school merchandise, apparel, collectibles, and digital experiences.
Speaking on behalf of Swat Kats Enterprises, creators Tremblay Bros. said, “We’re pleased to collaborate with Sony YAY! as they take on the licensing and merchandising rights for Swat Kats in India. Their proven expertise in building successful IP-led product lines makes them a strong partner to extend the franchise’s legacy. We look forward to seeing fans connect with Swat Kats through a new range of engaging and well-crafted products.”
The L&M strategy for ‘Swat Kats’ will combine nostalgia with new-age relevance, positioning the brand not only for children aged 8–14 but also for millennial fans who grew up watching the show. The partnership is expected to unlock a wide range of consumer experiences across physical and digital platforms — from merchandise collections to immersive activations.
With this move, Sony YAY! reinforces its commitment to building scalable IP franchises that go beyond screen-based storytelling to touch every aspect of a child’s (and fan’s) lifestyle. By adding Swat Kats to its arsenal, the network strengthens its role as a leading player in India’s rapidly growing kids’ entertainment and consumer products segment.
