The live-action remake of the popular film ‘Moana’ will be directed by Thomas Kail, the Tony Award-winning director of the famous Broadway play “Hamilton.”
According to PTI, the film will be Kail’s feature narrative directorial debut, following episodes of shows such as ‘Grease: Live’ and ‘Fosse/Verdon’.
Dwayne Johnson and the Hollywood Studio announced the project last month.
Johnson, who voiced Maui, the demigod of the wind and sea in the 2016 animated film, will return for the remake.
Jared Bush, who wrote the original film’s screenplay, co-wrote the remake with Dana Ledoux Miller.
The film is set in ancient Polynesia and tells the story of ‘Moana’, the strong-willed daughter of a coastal village chief who is chosen by the ocean to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti.
‘Moana’ sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people when a blight strikes her island.
The new version, like the animated film, will celebrate Pacific Islanders’ islands, communities, and traditions as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to forge her own path.
Auli’i Cravalho, who played Moana in the first film, will executive produce alongside Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co.
The original film was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and written by Clements, Musker, Chris Williams, Don Hall, Pamela Ribon, Aaron Kandell, and Jordan Kandell.
