Meta-owned WhatsApp is working on a new feature called ‘WhatsApp usernames’ that will allow users to choose unique usernames for their accounts.
According to IANS, this feature will allow users to choose a unique and memorable username rather than relying solely on phone numbers to identify contacts.
The company may also allow users to contact others by entering a username into the app without knowing their phone numbers.
Furthermore, the report stated that the company is working on integrating the feature into the app settings, specifically a section dedicated to this feature within WhatsApp Settings > Profile.
WhatsApp users will be able to add an extra layer of privacy to their accounts with the ability to choose a username, according to the report.
The WhatsApp username feature is currently in development and will be made available to beta testers in a future app update.
Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that billions of WhatsApp users will soon be able to modify a message within 15 minutes of sending it.
This feature is currently being rolled out to users worldwide and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks. All users have to do is long-press on a sent message and select ‘Edit’ from the menu for up to 15 minutes.
