Google will pay The New York Times $100 mn over three years as part of a broad agreement to use its content on some of its platforms.
According to IANS, Alphabet will use the New York Times content on Google News Showcase and other platforms.
The New York Times announced an expansion of its agreement with Google in February of this year.
It was “described as an expanded agreement that included content distribution and subscriptions, as well as using Google tools for marketing and ad-product experimentation.”
The New York Times and Google did not respond immediately to this.
The agreement covers distribution, subscriptions, marketing, and advertising products.
Google News Showcase, an online news experience, was launched in late 2020. Through an enhanced storytelling experience, this platform enables participating publishers to share their expertise and editorial voice.
The platform also serves as a global content licensing program. Google compensates participating publishers for curating quality journalism to improve the online news experience for both readers and publishers.
Google News Showcase provides free access to select paywalled articles on a participating publisher’s website that would otherwise be available only to subscribers to help readers discover new content.
