Reliance Jio gained the highest number of wireless mobile subscribers in August, adding nearly 2.40 million users, followed by Bharti Airtel with about 2.11 million additions, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) yesterday.
According to a PTI report from New Delhi yesterday, Jio’s wireless mobile subscriber base rose to 508.43 million at the end of August from 506.03 million at the end of July, translating into a net addition of 2.40 million subscribers.
Airtel added 2.11 million users, with the monthly gains pushing its subscriber base to about 491.60 million from 489.49 million.
Vodafone Idea added about 506,000 wireless mobile subscribers during the month, while state-owned BSNL gained nearly 493,000 users. MTNL, meanwhile, saw a decline of about 5,900 subscribers.
The TRAI data, in the meanwhile, highlighted that India’s broadband subscriber base rose 0.61 percent month-on-month to 1,101.21 million at the end of August 2026, while the total telephone subscriber base increased 0.47 percent to 1,360.70 million.
The broadband base stood at 1,094.48 million at the end of July. Broadband subscriptions comprised 48.63 million wired and 1,052.58 million wireless connections, including M2M cellular mobile connections.
Excluding M2M connections, the broadband subscriber base stood at 1,010.28 million. Mobile wireless access accounted for 1,033.24 million broadband connections, fixed wireless access 19.34 million and fixed wired access 48.63 million.
Reliance Jio led the broadband segment with 538.03 million subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with 386.39 million and Vodafone Idea with 130.88 million.
The top five providers together accounted for 98.58 percent of the market.
The total wireless subscriber base, comprising wireless mobile and FWA subscribers, rose to 1,312.25 million from 1,306.27 million in July, a monthly growth of 0.46 percent.
Overall tele-density increased to 95.07 percent at the end of August from 94.68 percent in July.
FWA subscriptions also increased during the month, with 5G FWA subscribers rising to 13.45 million from 13.21 million in July. Of these, 6.47 million were urban and 6.98 million rural subscribers.
