Prime Video, which released yesterday the trailer of first-ever series adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic debut novel ‘Carrie’, has said the show will start streaming globally from October 7.

The series, according to an Amazon statement yesterday, is described as a bold reinvention of King’s coming-of-age story and is adapted for television by Mike Flanagan, who serves as showrunner, writer and director.

He has also executive produced the series and directed four episodes, while King serves as an executive producer.

Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, a misfit high schooler whose life changes after her father’s sudden death forces her into public high school. There, she faces a viral bullying scandal, the pressures and cruelty of the social media age, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers alongside her adolescence.

The eight-episode series expands King’s story, following the everyday choices that build towards a single shattering night and exploring whether Carrie is becoming a hero, a monster or something more complicated.

Howell was chosen for the titular role after an extensive search involving more than 1,000 actors.

The cast also includes Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.

King’s debut novel ‘Carrie’ was published in 1974 and spent 14 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. It has been translated into more than 35 languages, while King’s books have sold more than 350 million copies worldwide.

Brian De Palma’s 1976 film adaptation of ‘Carrie’, an Academy Award-nominated feature, further cemented the story’s cultural impact. The film marks its 50th anniversary this year.

The series is an Amazon MGM Studios production.
