Kolkata’s enduring love affair with football was on full display on Sunday as ZEE5 organised a grand football carnival at Vivekananda Park on Southern Avenue, bringing together more than 1,100 football enthusiasts, fan clubs, artists and celebrities in a vibrant celebration inspired by the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 festivities.
The event transformed South Kolkata into a colourful spectacle of sport, entertainment and cultural expression. According to a press release, the carnival rally was flagged off by Dr. Indranil Khan and witnessed participation from football supporters, dhakis, chau performers, cheerleaders, dancers and members of various community groups.
The procession moved through key stretches of South Kolkata, creating a festive atmosphere with live music, performances, themed installations and team-affiliated fan zones. Designed to capture the excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup 2026, the initiative sought to celebrate football while highlighting Kolkata’s unique cultural identity and strong community spirit.
The carnival offered spectators and participants an immersive experience that blended the passion of football with Bengal’s rich artistic traditions. Traditional dhak performances, colourful chau dances and energetic cheerleading acts added a distinctly local flavour to the celebrations, turning city streets into a lively platform where sport and culture came together.
Adding star power to the event were actors Vikram Chatterjee, Priyanka Sarkar, Ayush Das and Sushmita Roy from ‘Taarkata’, along with Bonny Sengupta and Angana Roy from ‘Prem Shots’. The celebrities interacted with fans throughout the rally, further elevating the festive mood.
Several well-known football personalities also attended the event, including Rahim Nabi, Mehtab Hossain, Aloke Mukherjee, Biswajit Bhattacharya, Sangram Mukherjee, Snehasish Chockroborty and Nilava Chockroborty, reinforcing the city’s deep connection with the sport.
Speaking about the initiative, Kartik Mahadev, Chief Marketing Officer of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited, said the company wanted to celebrate the FIFA World Cup 2026 in a way that resonated with Kolkata’s football culture. He noted that the carnival was designed to unite fans, local traditions and entertainment in a shared experience that extended beyond the screen and reflected the passion football inspires among audiences.
Mahadev added that as viewers prepare for the FIFA World Cup 2026 on ZEE5, such initiatives help the platform connect with communities through immersive and culturally relevant experiences that celebrate moments important to them.
The football carnival is part of ZEE5’s broader effort to create engagement beyond digital viewing by bringing fans together through large-scale on-ground experiences. As anticipation for the FIFA World Cup 2026 continues to build, the platform is looking to strengthen its connection with sports enthusiasts through initiatives that celebrate football, local culture and community participation.
With thousands joining the festivities and the streets of South Kolkata transformed into a football-themed celebration, the carnival highlighted not only the city’s passion for the game but also the power of sport to bring communities together.
