ZEE5 has unveiled the trailer of its upcoming original series ‘Brown’, a neo-noir psychological crime thriller starring Karisma Kapoor in what is being described as one of the most intense roles of her career. Set against the haunting backdrop of Kolkata, the series is scheduled to premiere on June 5 exclusively on the streaming platform.
According to a ZEE5 press release, ‘Brown’ is a character-driven thriller that blends crime, psychological drama and emotional depth. Directed by Abhinay Deo and produced by Zee Studios, the series also stars Jisshu Sengupta, Surya Sharma, Soni Razdan and Ajinkya Deo in pivotal roles.
At the heart of the story is Rita Brown, played by Karisma Kapoor, a once-celebrated police officer who has fallen from grace and is struggling with alcoholism and the burden of her past. When the daughter of a powerful businessman is found murdered, Rita is reluctantly pulled back into active duty to investigate a string of brutal killings that have shaken the city.
As she teams up with Inspector Arjun, portrayed by Surya Sharma, the investigation takes them deep into a world of corruption, trauma and hidden secrets. The case becomes increasingly personal as both officers are forced to confront their own emotional scars while tracking a killer whose understanding of pain mirrors their own.
Unlike conventional crime dramas that focus primarily on solving a mystery, ‘Brown’ places equal emphasis on the psychological journeys of its characters. The series explores themes of guilt, grief, redemption and moral ambiguity, while using Kolkata’s rich cultural texture, social divides and decaying beauty as an integral part of the narrative.
Speaking about the series, Kaveri Das, Business Head – Hindi ZEE5, said ‘Brown’ reflects the platform’s focus on distinctive, emotionally layered storytelling. She noted that the show is less about the mechanics of a crime investigation and more about flawed individuals navigating trauma, vulnerability and healing.
Director Abhinay Deo described ‘Brown’ as an exploration of damaged people searching for meaning and redemption within a broken system. According to him, the narrative challenges traditional ideas of justice and morality while creating a world where every character exists in shades of grey.
For Karisma Kapoor, the role marks a significant departure from her previous performances. She said Rita Brown is a deeply flawed yet resilient woman whose strength lies as much in her vulnerability as in her courage. Kapoor added that the emotional honesty of the script and the complexity of the character made the experience particularly personal and transformative.
Jisshu Sengupta, who also plays a key role in the series, said the story gradually reveals its layers and combines suspense with emotional depth. He added that seeing Kolkata emerge as such an important part of the storytelling made the project even more special.
With its atmospheric setting, morally complex characters and an emotionally charged narrative, ‘Brown’ aims to offer viewers a darker and more introspective take on the crime thriller genre when it arrives on ZEE5 this week.
