After receiving international acclaim at its world premiere in London, the Kashmiri short film ‘Tasrufdar: Djinns of Kashmir’ is set to premiere in Srinagar later this month. The screening will mark the film’s first public showing in Kashmir.
Directed by Kapil Mattoo, ‘Tasrufdar: Djinns of Kashmir’ is a Kashmiri-language film that explores themes of memory, loss and reconciliation against the backdrop of the events of 1990.
According to a PTI report, the filmmaker hopes the Srinagar premiere will encourage meaningful conversations among Kashmiris about a difficult chapter in the region’s history.
Mattoo described the film as a deeply personal project that goes beyond cinema. He said ‘Tasrufdar’ is an emotional journey that seeks to bring to the surface feelings that have remained buried for more than three decades.
‘It is an emotion for me. It is more than a film. I think it is a necessary conversation between two Kashmiris,’Mattoo told PTI in an interview. Describing ‘Tasrufdar’ as more than just a film, he said it is an emotional journey that aims to spark an honest dialogue among Kashmiris on memories, loss and reconciliation rooted in the events of 1990.
The film was well received during its London premiere, earning praise for its sensitive storytelling and its portrayal of Kashmir’s emotional and social landscape.
The upcoming Srinagar screening will give local audiences an opportunity to watch the film in the region where its story is rooted.
With its first public screening in Kashmir, ‘Tasrufdar: Djinns of Kashmir’ aims to use cinema as a platform to encourage conversations around remembrance, healing and reconciliation while reflecting on the lasting human impact of the events of 1990.
