The original ‘Star Wars’ film will make its first-ever IMAX release in 2027 as part of Lucasfilm’s yearlong celebration of the franchise’s 50th anniversary, with ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ following in IMAX 70mm later that year.

 The newly restored version of the 1977 film, later renamed ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, will open in IMAX on February 19, 2027, according to a post on Starwars.com.

It will be shown at select IMAX 70mm locations and in select theatres for a limited time.

 On May 28, 2027, Lucasfilm will release ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’, an all-new standalone adventure directed and produced by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon.

The film was shot for IMAX using IMAX-certified film cameras and converted to IMAX 70mm prints for release at select IMAX film locations.

The film follows Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue who is confronted by his mysterious past and thrown into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy.

The cast also includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray and Amy Adams. Jonathan Tropper wrote the film, with Levy and Kathleen Kennedy producing.

In August 2025 when the cast of the new movie was announced, Levy said,  “I feel a profound sense of excitement and honour as we begin production on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’.

“From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible ‘Star Wars’ galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally.”
