Sony Sports Network has announced the television broadcast of the first-ever World Pickleball League (WPBL) in India. Scheduled to kick off on January 24, 2025, this franchise-based league marks a major milestone for Pickleball, a sport rapidly growing in popularity across the country.
With an estimated 50,000 active players in India and nearly 1,000 courts, the sport’s community is expanding steadily. The WPBL, conceptualized by Arjuna Awardee Gaurav Natekar and former India No. 1 Arati Ponnappa Natekar, aims to showcase Pickleball’s dynamic appeal while providing high-octane matches to audiences nationwide, the channel said in a press release.
The WPBL will feature six franchise teams:
- Dilli Dillwale
- Pune United
- Mumbai Pickle Power
- Bengaluru Jawans
- Chennai Super Champs
- Hyderabad Superstars
The league promises ten days of exciting action, with 48 top international players from 14 countries competing in 18 matches. Fans can expect a mix of India’s finest Pickleball talent, including Vrushali Thakare, Mayur Patil, and Isha Lakhani, alongside global stars like William Sobek, Willy Ching, and Max Freeman.
