Amazon MX Player’s newly launched cop drama ‘Kaptaan’ is drawing attention for its gritty narrative and layered characters, with Saqib Saleem stepping into the role of SSP Samardeep, an encounter specialist navigating a morally complex world.

According to a press release, the series is set in the volatile backdrop of Jwalabad and explores themes of power, ambition and shifting loyalties. Directed by Jatin Wagle and produced by Pammi Baweja and Harman Baweja under Baweja Studios, ‘Kaptaan’ features an ensemble cast including Siddharth Nigam, Anjumm Shharma, Kavita Kaushik, Poojaa Gor and Anushka Kaushik.

Speaking about his character, Saqib Saleem said what drew him to SSP Samardeep was the absence of a typical heroic arc. He described the character as someone who doesn’t seek validation but commands presence, adding that the role’s emotional depth stems from a fractured personal history rather than a straightforward sense of justice. According to him, this internal conflict made the character far more compelling to portray.

He also spoke about his on-screen and off-screen dynamic with Poojaa Gor, highlighting the layered relationship between their characters. Saleem noted that their preparation involved detailed conversations around subtext and backstories, which added nuance to their performances. Off screen, he said, their camaraderie remained light-hearted, helping balance the intensity of the show’s subject matter.

‘Kaptaan’ positions itself in a space where justice is rarely black and white, instead unfolding in shades of grey. With its focus on character-driven storytelling and a high-stakes narrative, the series aims to offer a gripping viewing experience.
