A mother’s love can be unconditional, but what happens when it turns into an obsession? That’s the unsettling question at the heart of Prime Video’s upcoming psychological drama ‘The Girlfriend’. Golden Globe-winning actress Robin Wright takes on the complex role of Laura, a woman whose seemingly perfect life spirals when her son introduces a new love into the family.
According to a press release from Prime Video, ‘The Girlfriend’ explores how Laura’s deep attachment to her son Daniel, played by Laurie Davidson, begins to tip into paranoia after meeting his girlfriend Cherry, portrayed by Olivia Cooke. As Laura’s suspicions grow, viewers are left to wonder: is Cherry hiding something, or is Laura’s maternal devotion clouding her judgement?
Speaking about her character, Wright explained, “She is the woman who has everything, and her prized possession is her son, Daniel. She believes he will never leave her side, and because of that, she does everything to keep him close.
“When Cherry comes into the picture, it disrupts Laura’s world. She becomes overly protective and doesn’t want to lose him, especially to someone she distrusts. The heart of the show is finding out if Cherry is who she claims to be. Laura sees herself as a justice seeker, but all her emotions and energy are invested in her son, not her husband.”
Based on Michelle Frances’ bestselling novel of the same name, ‘The Girlfriend’ is directed by Andrea Harkin and Robin Wright. The series stars Wright, Olivia Cooke and Laurie Davidson in the lead roles, alongside Waleed Zuaiter as Laura’s husband, Howard.
‘The Girlfriend’ will premiere on September 10 streaming in both English and Hindi.
