Nippon TV heads into MIPTV 2022 with three new formats

Nippon TV, Japan’s leading multiplatform entertainment powerhouse, Monday announced that it will head into MIPTV 2022 with three new formats, two of which are unscripted, ‘Dark Doubts’ (60min eps.) and ‘Turbo Brain’ (30-60min eps.) with one new scripted format ‘Tall Older’ (60min 10 eps.).

All three of these formats just recently aired on Nippon TV to stellar ratings and Nippon TV will be offering these titles at MIPTV 2022 for the first time to its buyers around the world.

The announcement was made by Mikiko Nishiyama, Managing Director, International Business Development, Nippon TV.

Dark Doubt- The show first aired on Nippon TV in December 2021 to stellar ratings among young adults. The unscripted format is an escape game show with a thrilling horror twist, where seven contestants attempt to break out through the pitch-black stages to clear missions within a time limit. While placed in unknown locations (hospitals, schools, etc.), contestants must work together to navigate through the dark to escape from fear. As an additional twist, secret contestants’ “moles” are thrown in the mix to heighten the thrill and suspense among contestants. It is an ultimate challenge of horror, testing to see who will manage to go through the dark despite all doubts.

Turbo Brain- The series aired four episodes in November and December 2021 on Nippon TV to stellar ratings among children, teenagers, and 20-to-34-year age group, is the ultimate rapid-fire battle of the brains. Knowledge is usually power, but not in this show. Contestants will have to put their brains into turbo-made and answer questions at a supersonic speed. The universally themed questions are visually engaging and cognitively demanding. In a one-on-one knockout tournament, six contestants will compete to be crowned champion in this fun brain-teasing game show.

Tall Older- It is a dramedy series that follows an executive assistant to the CEO of a startup company growing at breakneck speed. Initially, the boss bombards her day in and day out with tall orders he concocts on a whim. While barely ever hanging time to think carefully about her future, one day her boss asks her to be the CEO of a subsidiary. Complicating things even further are the ‘romantic hunches’ as she finds herself at the mercy of her charismatic boss. ‘Tall Older’ was originally broadcast weekly on Nippon TV from January to March 2022.

Commenting on the new formats, Mikiko Nishiyama said, “In terms of our new unscripted formats, Dark Doubt turns its back on the traditional notion that game shows are just funny and lively. It illustrates how fear is a universal form of entertainment that fascinates people. Using night-vision and fixed-point cameras in pitch-dark spaces, the resulting visual impact is quite amazing. Turbo Brain tests the human brain’s ability to make instantaneous decisions¬—a function necessary to survive. Viewers can immerse themselves in the show just like the contestants and take a shot at the quiz questions, whose difficulty levels are adjusted exquisitely so that they are tough to answer in a split second”.

“As for our scripted title, anyone who follows our protagonist in Tall Order will want to rally behind her as she tackles the endless impossible demands from her boss in the stressful office environment in solving the myriad of business and personal troubles, and then suddenly becomes promoted as CEO against her will. On top of that, the sense of romance with a cheeky colleague and a charismatic boss makes the story even more exciting. Nippon TV’s scripted formats that depict the lives of women, such as Mother and Woman -My Life for My Children-, are receiving high acclaim globally, and I am confident that Tall Order presents a story that will resonate with viewers the world over,” added Nishiyama.
