Netflix’s ‘Chumbak’ revives neighbourhood life; debuts Aug. 28

Netflix has announced the launch of its new multi-generational comedy series ‘Chumbak’, which will premiere on August 28.

Created by writer-director and co-producer Aatish Kapadia and producer-showrunner JD Majethia, the series is set in a contemporary urban Indian neighbourhood where neighbours become an extended family, celebrating together, sharing each other’s joys and struggles, and turning everyday moments into lively community events, the streamer said yesterday.

According to Netflix, ‘Chumbak’ centres on five neighbouring families whose lives are deeply intertwined, bringing back the warmth of neighbourhoods where front doors were always open and people never needed an invitation to drop by.

The streaming platform describes the show as a feel-good comedy in which no celebration is too small, no crisis stays private, and every day comes with a generous dose of humour and chaos.

The ensemble cast features Neena Gupta, Deven Bhojani, Arjun Bijlani, Helly Shah, Manasi Parekh, Sumeet Vyas, Sandeepa Dhar, Sumeet Raghavan, Anant V. Joshi, Amyra Dastur, Delnaaz Irani and Atul Kumar.

Netflix said the series promises memorable characters ranging from unofficial problem solvers and enthusiastic advice-givers to accidental troublemakers and lovable gossip enthusiasts who transform ordinary moments into extraordinary ones.

Kapadia and Majethia, the creative duo behind the cult television favourites ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ and ‘Khichdi’, return with a story that Netflix says combines warmth, wit and sharp observations on relationships while introducing viewers to a vibrant community that functions as one large family.

Tanya Bami, Series Head, Netflix India, said comedy continues to be a genre enjoyed by Netflix members and described ‘Chumbak’ as a world where neighbours become extended family.

She said the series explores themes including contemporary marriages, modern-day parenting, ageing friendships and community life, while retaining the familiar, heartfelt humour that has defined Kapadia and Majethia’s storytelling.

Bami added that Netflix is excited to bring the comedy to audiences in India and around the world as part of its expanding slate across genres and formats.

In a joint statement, JD Majethia and Aatish Kapadia said they wanted ‘Chumbak’ to celebrate the “beautiful chaos” of nostalgic neighbourhoods where neighbours gradually become family.

‘Chumbak’, according to the makers and presenter, is about the people who show up — often uninvited, occasionally unhelpful, but always with love — reinforcing the idea that family is not always the one people are born into, but sometimes the one living next door.
