Netflix has released the trailer and first-look images for the third and final season of its historical drama series ‘The Empress’. The final season will premiere worldwide on Netflix on November 12.
According to an official announcement by Netflix yesterday,the new season follows Empress Elisabeth, played by Devrim Lingnau, as she faces new challenges in her marriage and at the royal court. After returning from the Sardinian War, Emperor Franz, played by Philip Froissant, struggles with the loss of thousands of soldiers. His changed behaviour and infidelity put further pressure on their marriage.
Elisabeth also faces growing opposition at court and struggles with her health. She eventually leaves Vienna and travels to a remote island to recover. There, she meets Count Andrássy, played by Dejan Bućin, who is a leader of the Hungarian independence movement. Their meeting brings a new turn to Elisabeth’s personal life.
Meanwhile, Franz’s brother Maximilian, played by Johannes Nussbaum, begins a new chapter with his wife Marie, played by Runa Greiner, as he prepares to take the imperial throne in Mexico.
The final season will focus on Elisabeth’s struggle between following her heart and fulfilling her duties as empress. Katharina Eyssen returns as showrunner, while Florian Cossen and Julia Langhof direct the season.
