Netflix has announced that its Japanese series ‘Quiztopia’ will premiere globally on December 17. The streamer has also released the teaser trailer and announced 16 new cast members.

According to an announcement by Netflix today, ‘Quiztopia’ is based on the manga of the same name written by Reiichi Sugimoto and illustrated by Shinkichi Kato. The manga was first published in 1993 and the series will be released as an eight-episode live-action show.

The story is set in an alternate version of Japan, where a national quiz show called ‘Quiztopia’ has become the country’s highest governing authority. Under the National Quiz Law, people who win the quiz can have almost any wish granted by the government, including wealth, fame and even the removal of a criminal record.

Takayuki Yamada plays KK, the host of the quiz show. The story follows him after he comes into contact with a group planning to bring down ‘Quiztopia’.

The newly announced cast includes Riko Ishida, Kana Kurashina, Koji Seto, Masahiro Takashima, Eiko Koike and Renji Ishibashi. Rin Kataoka, Yuzu Aoki, Naoki Matsukawa, Yuki Imai, Shunsuke Daito, Akira Maehara, Hoshino Disco, First Summer Uika, Keiko Horiuchi and Toshinori Omi are also part of the cast.The series used 8,000 extras during filming to create the large crowds shown in the story. ‘Quiztopia’ will premiere globally on December 17, only on Netflix.
