Netflix has announced a new series based on Brazilian author Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s popular autobiography ‘Happy Old Year’. The series will be produced by Amaia and O2 Filmes.

According to a Netflix press release yesterday ,the announcement was made during the 24th edition of the Flip (Paraty International Literary Festival). Published in 1982, ‘Happy Old Year’ is considered one of Brazil’s most important literary works and is based on Paiva’s real-life experiences.

The story follows Paiva’s journey after a tragic accident left him quadriplegic at the age of 20. The book explores his struggles, emotions and experiences while challenging stereotypes about disability. It also focuses on themes like youth, courage and adapting to life’s challenges.

Netflix Brazil’s Series Director Hana Vaisman said the adaptation aims to connect with existing fans of the book while introducing the story to a new generation of viewers.Paiva said he is excited to see his personal story move from literature to the screen. The book has previously been adapted into a play, musical and opera.

Production of the series has not started yet, and Netflix has not announced a release date. The producers said they aim to bring the story to screens with honesty and emotional depth.
