Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant, Meta AI, has reached a significant milestone, with more than 400 mn monthly active users, as revealed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The rapidly growing AI platform also sees around 185 mn users on a weekly basis, reflecting its increasing popularity and competitiveness in the AI chatbot space.
The announcement highlights Meta AI’s rapid growth, especially as it faces strong competition from other prominent AI assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot. “…Growing quickly, and we haven’t even rolled out in the UK (United Kingdom), Brazil, or EU (European Union) yet,” Zuckerberg stated in a post on Threads, The Economic Times reported.
Zuckerberg has previously set an ambitious target to make Meta AI the most widely used AI assistant by the end of the year. The current figures suggest that Meta AI is on track to reach this goal, particularly as it continues to expand globally. For comparison, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the current market leader, has reported a weekly user base of over 200 mn.
OpenAI also recently announced that its AI chatbot has more than 200 mn weekly active users, doubling its numbers in less than a year. According to OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson, 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies are utilizing OpenAI’s products, and the use of its API has doubled since the launch of ChatGPT-4o mini in July.
Meta AI’s integration into the company’s suite of apps—WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, which collectively have about three billion daily users—has been a key factor in its growth. In contrast, ChatGPT is currently available as a standalone app, which makes Meta AI’s rapid expansion even more notable.
With these impressive numbers, Meta AI is positioning itself as a major player in the AI chatbot market, reflecting the growing demand for AI-driven interactions across platforms.
