The upcoming fantasy comedy-thriller series ‘Khakee Circus’, starring Tamil actor Munishkanth in the lead, is set to premiere on ZEE5 from April 10, 2026. The seven-episode series is directed by Ameen Barif and promises a mix of humour, suspense and offbeat storytelling.
According to a report by IANS, the show was earlier titled ‘Once Upon a Time in Kayamkulam’, but was later renamed ‘Khakee Circus’ to better reflect its quirky tone, eccentric characters and the unpredictable narrative it unfolds.
Written and directed by Ameen Barif and produced by Srinithi Sagar under Rise East Entertainment, the series features a diverse ensemble cast including Subash Selvam, Rajesh Madhavan, Gowthami Nair, Vinsu Rache, Savithri, Amrudha, Abdul Lee, Maruthupandiyan, Rakesh Ushar, Vigneshwar, Arnukumar Pavumba and Chithtirasenan alongside Munishkanth.
Set in a quiet coastal town, the story takes an unusual turn when a bizarre crime throws a sub-jail into chaos—not because someone escapes, but because someone breaks into it. As a book-loving jailer and an overly eager constable try to unravel the mystery, a cunning thief appears to be orchestrating the events from the shadows. With townspeople, amateur detectives and inmates all adding to the confusion, the situation spirals into a chaotic chase where each clue leads to something even more unexpected.
Director Ameen Barif said the project stood out for its ability to blend multiple tones, combining comedy, thriller and elements of fantasy while staying rooted in a small-town setting. He emphasised that the strength of the series lies in its characters and the way they react to the unfolding chaos in their own flawed and often humorous ways.
Munishkanth described ‘Khakee Circus’ as a unique experience, noting that the series is fast-paced, unpredictable and filled with characters that feel both humorous and real. He added that the balance between tension and comedy gives each scene an element of surprise, making the narrative engaging and fresh.
With its unconventional premise and ensemble cast, ‘Khakee Circus’ is expected to offer viewers a distinct blend of genres when it begins streaming on ZEE5 from April 10.
