Nearly two decades after the sitcom ‘Joey’ went off air, fans of Friends finally have access to the complete series online.
The final eight unaired episodes of the short-lived Friends spinoff, starring Matt LeBlanc, have been uploaded to the official Friends YouTube channel, giving viewers a chance to watch the full storyline for the first time, UNI reported.
Originally premiering in 2004, ‘Joey’ followed LeBlanc’s beloved character ‘Joey’ Tribbiani as he left New York for Los Angeles to pursue bigger opportunities in acting. The show featured a fresh ensemble cast including Drea de Matteo, Paulo Costanzo, Jennifer Coolidge and Andrea Anders. Despite the massive popularity ‘Joey’ enjoyed on Friends, the spinoff could not sustain its early momentum.
The comedy opened with promising numbers — its pilot episode attracted an impressive 18.6 million viewers — but ratings dipped steadily over time. NBC cancelled the show in 2006 midway through its second season, leaving eight episodes unaired in the United States, though they were broadcast in some international markets.
Kevin S. Bright, co-creator and executive producer of Friends, had earlier spoken about why ‘Joey’ struggled to resonate in the same way as the original series. In a 2006 interview with The Age, he admitted the character’s portrayal shifted too drastically. According to him, ‘Joey’ changed from a dependable, lovable womaniser into “a guy who couldn’t get a job, couldn’t ask a girl out… He became a pathetic, mopey character… I felt he was moving in the wrong direction, but I did not hear,” as quoted by Variety.
With all 46 episodes now available on YouTube, fans and longtime followers of the iconic Friends universe can finally revisit the complete ‘Joey’ journey — a viewing experience that wasn’t fully possible during its original television run.
