JioStar has expanded the responsibilities of senior sports media executive Prashant Khanna, entrusting him with an enhanced leadership role that includes oversight of Rights & Innovation for Sports alongside the Cricinfo business.

Khanna announced the development through a LinkedIn post, describing it as a new chapter in a journey that has spanned nearly nine years across Star, Disney Star and now JioStar. The expanded role will see him take on a broader mandate covering sports rights, strategic partnerships, innovation initiatives and digital sports businesses.

“After nearly nine years across Star, Disney Star and now JioStar, I’m excited to be taking on a new role across Rights & Innovation for Sports, along with the Cricinfo Business,” Khanna wrote in his post.

Reflecting on his professional journey, Khanna noted that he has worked extensively across production, technology and innovation functions, contributing to the development of capabilities behind some of the industry’s major sporting events and broadcasts. He said the new role would allow him to leverage those experiences from a broader business perspective and contribute to the next phase of growth for JioStar’s sports portfolio.

Khanna also pointed to the changing dynamics of the sports media industry, where collaboration between broadcasters, rights holders and technology partners is becoming increasingly important. He said the evolving ecosystem is creating new opportunities and expressed his enthusiasm for working closely with teams, partners, leagues and governing bodies to strengthen partnerships, unlock growth opportunities and create long-term value.

In his post, he also thanked colleagues and the company’s leadership team for their trust and support throughout his journey.

Apart from his responsibilities at JioStar, Khanna currently serves as Production Contract Manager for the International Cricket Council for the 2024–27 cycle. He is also a member of the IPL World Feed Production Committee under the Board of Control for Cricket in India, contributing to the production and broadcast framework of one of the world’s biggest cricket leagues.

Before joining the Star network in 2017, Khanna spent more than seven years with The Walt Disney Company, where he held leadership roles across technology, operations, field operations and research and development. His career also includes stints with major media and technology organisations such as NDTV, Turner Broadcasting System, Reliance MediaWorks, Hinduja Group, Encompass Digital Media and QSport Media.

The expanded mandate reflects JioStar’s continued focus on strengthening its sports business through a combination of rights management, technological innovation and digital growth, as competition for sports audiences and premium content intensifies across platforms.
