JioHotstar unveils trailer of drama on marital rape ‘Chiraiya’

Streaming platform JioHotstar has released the trailer of its upcoming series ‘Chiraiya, a social drama that aims to spark conversations around the sensitive and often unspoken issue of marital rape in India.

The series, headlined by Divya Dutta, highlights the idea that marriage does not take away a woman’s right to her body, voice or choice, and urges society to confront realities that often remain hidden within homes.

The six-episode series is set to premiere on March 20. Directed by Shashant Shah, the show features an ensemble cast including Sanjay Mishra, Siddharth Shaw, Prasanna Bisht, Faisal Rashid, Tinnu Anand, Sarita Joshi and Anjum Saxena. The narrative explores how silence within families can often enable injustice and prevent difficult truths from coming to light.

The trailer offers a glimpse into the life of Kamlesh, played by Divya Dutta, a daughter-in-law whose world begins to shift when she discovers that her sister-in-law Pooja is facing sexual abuse within her marriage. As the truth begins to surface, Kamlesh finds herself caught between protecting the family’s reputation and standing up for what is right. What starts as quiet concern gradually evolves into a deeply personal battle against long-held beliefs, forcing her to confront the reality that consent cannot simply be assumed within marriage.

Speaking about the series, Alok Jain of JioStar said the platform believes powerful storytelling has the ability to open hearts and start meaningful conversations. He said ‘Chiraiya’ reflects the platform’s commitment to presenting honest and bold narratives that address complex realities with sensitivity and responsibility. According to him, the series approaches the issue with empathy while remaining emotionally authentic, encouraging viewers to pause, reflect and build their own connections with the story.

Abhishek Daga, Business Head at SVF Entertainment, said the series marks the company’s step into the Hindi long-format storytelling space with a narrative that is both unsettling and necessary.

Director Shashant Shah described the project as an emotionally demanding experience. He said his intention from the beginning was to tell a deeply human story without sensationalising the subject.

Dutta said that with ‘Chiraiya’, the team is not merely telling a story but also reflecting the silences society has inherited over generations. She described Kamlesh as a character who stands at a crossroads between her love for family and her refusal to ignore injustice. According to the actor, the character’s journey is not a loud rebellion but a quiet awakening of a woman choosing dignity over fear.
