Luxembourg-based SES’s decision to push back commercial services of its new O3b mPOWER satellite constellation amid technical snags won’t impact its Indian joint venture partner Reliance Jio‘s upcoming broadband-from-space services launch plans as the latter has access to the global player’s alternate satellite systems, top sources close to Reliance said.
“The delayed commercial rollout (of SES’s O3b mPOWER satellites) will have no impact on the India launch schedules of Jio’s satellite-based gigabit fibre service (read: JioSpaceFiber) as Jio has access to SES’s O3b Classic medium-earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellation that has another five years of working life,” a person close to Jio told ET.
Last year, Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio Platforms and SES had formed a 51:49 joint venture to deliver fast broadband connectivity via satellites, entering a space where the likes of Bharti Group-backed OneWeb, Elon Musk-owned Starlink, Amazon and the Tatas have also announced their entries.
Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal recently said OneWeb is ready to launch nationally by end-November while Jio’s president Mathew Oommen said the Jio-SES combine can roll out JioSpaceFiber services within weeks of being allotted the spectrum.
