YouTube unveiled YouTube Labs, a new experimental platform introducing AI music hosts as its first feature, marking the streaming giant’s latest attempt to compete with Spotify’s AI DJ offering. The initiative is designed to enhance the listening experience on the YouTube Music app by combining personalized music with AI-generated commentary.
According to The Economic Times,Aparna Pappu, Vice President of YouTube Labs, explained in an official blog post, “The first experiment, AI music hosts, is designed to deepen your listening experience by sharing relevant stories, fan trivia, and fun commentary about your favorite music.” The feature is accessible via a sparkle icon positioned between the thumbs up/down and comment buttons, allowing users to choose when they hear the AI-generated commentary.
While YouTube enters the AI DJ space nearly two years after Spotify, which launched its AI DJ in 2023 and expanded with voice command features in 2025, the company hopes to differentiate itself by offering engaging stories, fan trivia, and insights alongside personalized playlists. Spotify’s AI DJ has seen engagement nearly double over the past year, demonstrating the growing popularity of AI-assisted music experiences.
YouTube has clarified that the AI commentary is experimental and may contain inaccuracies. Users can choose to snooze the commentary for an hour or a full day if they prefer uninterrupted listening. Currently, YouTube Labs is open to a limited number of US-based participants, with Premium subscribers receiving priority access to test these experimental features before a wider public rollout.
This move follows YouTube’s recent strategy of introducing Premium-only enhancements, including high-quality audio streaming and faster playback speeds of up to 4x, using its subscription base as a testing ground for new offerings. By combining AI technology with personalized music experiences, YouTube aims to strengthen its foothold in the music streaming space and provide a compelling alternative to Spotify’s popular AI DJ.
