In a significant regulatory breakthrough, global satellite communications giant Intelsat has received approval from the Indian government to provide direct broadcast services in the country. The landmark clearance makes Intelsat one of the first foreign satellite operators authorized to deliver extensive satellite coverage directly to Indian broadcast media companies—opening up fresh opportunities for content distribution and international expansion.

According to an official press release from Intelsat, the company has secured authorization for four of its geostationary (GEO) satellites—IS-17, IS-20, IS-36, and IS-39—to offer C-band coverage across India. This fleet will cater specifically to India’s booming broadcast media sector, enabling robust content delivery services both within the subcontinent and from India to global regions.

“This approval represents a significant step forward in Intelsat’s contribution to India’s space commerce sector, a source of great national pride,” said Gaurav Kharod, Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific at Intelsat. “Our extensive satellite network with four satellites covering the region will provide Indian broadcasters with reliable, high-quality connectivity solutions that meet their evolving needs. This authorization enables us to better serve our customers and contribute to India’s growing media landscape.”

The approval was granted by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), which governs commercial space activity in India. Following the regulatory clearance, Intelsat has already secured new business deals with three of India’s largest media companies, further solidifying its footprint in one of the world’s most vibrant broadcast markets.

This development is not just a boost for Intelsat’s growth in South Asia, but also a key move in strengthening India’s satellite infrastructure, offering more reliable transmission paths and wider media outreach across diverse geographies.

Intelsat, based in McLean, Virginia, operates one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks. Known for its innovation and leadership in global connectivity solutions for over six decades, the company continues to enable seamless satellite-based communication for government bodies, NGOs, and commercial enterprises. With its latest regulatory green light in India, Intelsat is poised to play a pivotal role in the digital and broadcast evolution of the subcontinent.
