The government has informed the Rajya Sabha that 386 private FM radio channels are currently operational across the country.

According to a MIB press release, the details were shared by Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan, in a written reply to an Unstarred Question raised by I. S. Inbadurai in Rajya Sabha.

In his reply, the Minister said that the government conducted e-auctions for 730 FM channels across 234 new cities on July 9-10, 2025 through a transparent process. The auction was widely publicised through print and electronic media before the bidding process.

The Minister informed that 18 bidders were successful during the auction cycle, including nine new entrants to the private FM radio sector.

The government also highlighted that under the Private FM Radio Policy, broadcasters are required to ensure that at least 20 percent of their daily broadcast content is in the local language of the city. The rule aims to promote regional culture, traditions and folk music through FM platforms.

The reply further stated that the Private FM Radio Phase-III Policy allows broadcasters to use Prasar Bharati towers and sites, wherever available, to support faster rollout of FM services.

The government also said it monitors public service announcements and coordinates with broadcasters for the timely dissemination of verified information during emergencies and important campaigns.
