HistoryTV18 is set to premiere History’s Greatest Mysteries: The Theft Of The Monalisa: Case Closed on June 19 at 9 pm, revisiting one of the most famous art thefts in history and the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic masterpiece from the Louvre Museum in 1911.
Hosted by Oscar and Golden Globe nominee and six-time Emmy Award winner Laurence Fishburne, the special explores the theft that transformed the ‘Mona Lisa’ from a celebrated Renaissance artwork into the world’s most famous painting, the platform said in a press release.
The programme recounts how artist Louis Béroud arrived at the Louvre on an August morning in 1911 intending to copy the painting, only to discover that it had vanished from its place on the wall. The disappearance triggered a massive investigation and drew international attention as French authorities launched a search for the missing masterpiece.
According to HistoryTV18, the investigation was led by Paris Police chief Louis Lépine and soon uncovered clues suggesting the involvement of someone familiar with the museum’s operations. As the case expanded, speculation surrounded several high-profile figures, including poet Guillaume Apollinaire, artist Pablo Picasso and financier J.P. Morgan.
The special follows the twists and turns of the two-year hunt for the painting, examining the theories, suspects and public fascination that surrounded the case. It also explores how the unprecedented media attention contributed to the painting’s rise as a global cultural icon.
