The much-loved Japanese character ‘Hello Kitty’ is finally heading to the big screen with a full-length animated feature film, and the makers have now locked its release date for July 2028. The upcoming project has also roped in the directors behind Moana 2, adding further excitement around the highly anticipated adaptation.
According to an ANI report, the film will be directed by David G. Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand, who previously worked on Disney’s Moana 2. The project marks a major step for Sanrio as it expands the global footprint of one of its most iconic characters through a large-scale theatrical release aimed at family audiences worldwide.
The announcement has already sparked strong reactions online, with fans eager to see how the universally loved character will be adapted for cinemas. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, industry buzz suggests the film will blend adventure, humour, friendship, and emotional storytelling — elements that have helped Hello Kitty remain popular across generations for decades.
Created by Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, ‘Hello Kitty’ has evolved from a simple cartoon character into a global pop culture phenomenon with merchandise, television shows, theme parks, games, and collaborations spanning multiple industries. The character continues to enjoy massive popularity among children as well as adult fans around the world.
The upcoming film is expected to further strengthen ‘Hello Kitty’s presence in global entertainment, especially as studios continue to invest heavily in established family-friendly franchises with strong international fan bases.
The film is currently slated for a theatrical release in July 2028.
