Google Podcasts is set to shut down, prompting users to transfer their favorite shows to YouTube Music before the April 2 closure date. The integration of podcasts into YouTube Music was announced globally in September 2023, with the transition date recently disclosed.
In a blog post, YouTube outlined plans to enhance the podcast experience on YouTube Music throughout 2024, promising improved features for fans and podcasters alike. As part of this process, Google Podcasts will be discontinued later in 2024.
For avid users of Google Podcasts, now is the time to migrate their subscriptions to YouTube Music or alternative applications. The feature is currently only available in the United States.
Here’s how users can transfer their subscriptions:
1. Open the Google Podcasts app.
2. Select “Export subscriptions” at the top of the screen.
3. Choose “Export” under ‘Export to YouTube Music.’
4. Switch to the YouTube Music app.
5. Select “Transfer” and then “Continue.”
6. Once the transfer is complete, go to the Library in YouTube Music to view subscriptions.
While the transfer may take a few minutes, users are advised to be patient. Some podcasts may not be available in YouTube Music, resulting in a “Content is unavailable” message.
Alternatively, users can move their subscriptions to another podcast app by downloading via an OPML file or using Google Takeout.
Listeners in the United States will have access to Google Podcasts until March 2024, with until July 2024 to migrate their subscriptions.
