Sanjay Gupta, currently serving as Google India’s country manager, has been promoted to the position of President for the Asia Pacific region, Moneycontrol has reported. Gupta will take over from Scott Beaumont, the current Asia Pacific president, who is set to retire by the end of this year after a nearly 16-year tenure.
The announcement was made through an internal email to Google employees. Gupta is expected to relocate to Singapore in the coming months, and the process to appoint a new head for Google India will commence shortly. In the interim, Roma Datta Chobey, the managing director for Digital Native Industries, Media and Entertainment, and Government at Google India, will oversee the company’s Large Customer Sales (LCS) unit.
Sanjay Gupta and Scott Beaumont confirmed their moves on LinkedIn. Beaumont expressed his confidence in Gupta’s ability to lead, citing Gupta’s ambition and commitment to leveraging technology for positive development in India. Beaumont stated, “Google is now at the forefront of an exciting new age of technology with AI. I shall look forward to following the progress but happily now pass on the baton to my friend and colleague Sanjay Gupta.”
Gupta joined Google in January 2020 as the country manager for the India market and also serves as the Vice President of Sales and Operations. India, being Google’s largest market in terms of users, is crucial for the company’s future growth, particularly in artificial intelligence.
The Asia Pacific region, encompassing Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, China, and Southeast Asia countries, contributes significantly to Google’s revenues. In Q2 2024, Google reported revenues of $13.8 billion from the Asia Pacific region, accounting for 16.3 percent of Alphabet’s overall revenues for the quarter.
“APAC isn’t just any region; it’s the heart of global growth and innovation, home to half the world’s population and poised to lead the tech revolution,” Gupta stated on LinkedIn. He highlighted the region’s tech-savvy users, skilled human capital, and thriving startup ecosystem as key drivers of growth. Gupta also emphasized Google’s investments in technical infrastructure, skills development, and partnerships with the technical and scientific community to fuel APAC’s growth.
Before joining Google, Gupta was the managing director of Star and Disney India, where he significantly expanded the company’s media presence and played a key role in launching Hotstar (now Disney+ Hotstar), which dominates India’s video streaming market. His tenure at Star included building the company’s sports business through strategic acquisitions and launching the Pro-Kabaddi League and the Indian Super League.
With Gupta’s extensive experience and proven track record, his leadership in the Asia Pacific region is expected to drive Google’s continued growth and innovation in one of the world’s most dynamic markets.
