Kangana Ranaut’s much-talked-about political drama ‘Emergency’ is set for its world television premiere on Zee Cinema, September 12, at 8 pm. The film revisits one of India’s darkest chapters — the 1975 Emergency — when democracy was suspended, censorship was imposed, and political dissent was silenced.
Written, directed, and headlined by Kangana Ranaut as Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Emergency delves into the complex interplay of power, politics, and resistance. It chronicles how leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan and Atal Bihari Vajpayee galvanized movements to restore justice and freedom during a time of fear and oppression.
Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who plays Jayaprakash Narayan, recalled his personal experience during the Emergency: “I was a student at the National School of Drama in 1975 and saw the silence and fear first-hand. Playing Jayaprakash Narayan ji was special because he stood up when others stayed quiet. This film is not just history, it’s a reminder and a lesson.”
Shreyas Talpade, portraying Atal Bihari Vajpayee, spoke about the weight of the role: “Playing Vajpayee ji came with great responsibility. I’m proud to be part of a film that captures such an important period and I hope viewers connect with it during the premiere.”
The cast also features Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Mahima Chaudhry, and the late Satish Kaushik. With a gripping narrative and powerful performances, ‘Emergency’ is more than just a period film — it is a reflection on resilience, patriotism, and the cost of silence.
Zee Cinema will bring the premiere to living rooms across the country, giving audiences a chance to relive a chapter of history that continues to resonate in contemporary times.
