The BBC has announced the main cast for its upcoming six-part adaptation of Henry James’ classic novel ‘The Portrait of a Lady’. According to a PTI report from London today, Actress Nell Tiger Free will play the lead role of Isabel Archer, the young American woman at the centre of the story.

Originally published in 1881, ‘The Portrait of a Lady’ is considered one of Henry James’ most celebrated novels. It follows Isabel Archer, an independent and intelligent young woman who travels to Europe after inheriting a large fortune. While she hopes to build a life on her own terms, she becomes trapped in relationships marked by manipulation, betrayal and emotional control.

The adaptation has been written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, known for her work on acclaimed films and television projects, while Aisling Walsh will direct all six episodes.

The series features an ensemble cast, with Gemma Arterton playing the mysterious Madame Merle, a close acquaintance who has a major influence on Isabel’s life. Jim Sturgess will portray Gilbert Osmond, the charming but manipulative man Isabel marries. Veteran actor Bill Nighy has been cast as Mr. Touchett, Isabel’s wealthy uncle, while Miranda Richardson will play Mrs. Touchett, Isabel’s outspoken aunt who encourages her to travel to Europe.

The new adaptation will bring Henry James’ timeless story of love, freedom, wealth and betrayal to a modern television audience while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original novel.
