Balaji Studios, the digital arm of Balaji Telefilms, has announced the launch of its new YouTube Original show ‘Ishk Dum Aur Idli Rasam’, which premiered on May 11 at 6 pm on the Balaji Telefilms YouTube channel. The show has already started generating buzz following the release of its trailer, which offers a blend of romance, food, family emotions and personal conflict.
According to a Balaji Studios press release, the series has been executed by Surbhi Chandna under Feel Good Studios and will stream every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on YouTube. The show is set inside a heritage South Indian restaurant fighting to survive in changing times, with the story deeply rooted in food, family legacy and emotional connections.
At the centre of the narrative is Meera Nair, played by Shiny Doshi, a chef who sees food as more than just a profession. For her, continuing her late father’s restaurant is about preserving memories, values and the emotional legacy attached to it. Her life takes an unexpected turn when Arjun Thakur, portrayed by Abhishek Kumar, enters the picture as a chef-investor with a modern culinary vision and a disciplined approach towards business.
As the two strong personalities come together, their professional clashes gradually turn into an emotional relationship shaped by ambition, memories and unresolved emotions. The series also stars Nehalaxmi Iyer in a key role alongside Aman Singh, Prerna Sehjpal, Vijayalaxmi Gurav and Karan Khanna.
Nitin Burman, Chief Revenue Officer at Balaji Telefilms, said the makers wanted to create a story that feels both contemporary and emotionally grounded. He stated that the show is not just a romance but a narrative driven by identity, emotions and contrasting perspectives. According to him, the growing response to Balaji Telefilms’ YouTube Originals reflects a clear shift in audience preference towards stories that feel personal, relatable and emotionally honest rather than purely larger-than-life entertainment.
He further added that launching the series on YouTube allows the studio to directly connect with a wider digital audience that values authenticity and relatable storytelling. Burman noted that the series aligns with Balaji Studios’ larger vision of creating stories that remain local in spirit while carrying universal emotions.
Speaking about the project, Surbhi Chandna said being associated with ‘Ishk Dum Aur Idli Rasam’ alongside Balaji Telefilms feels like a dream come true for her. She described the show as a heartfelt story filled with warmth and simplicity and said she instantly connected with its vision from the beginning.
Chandna added that being involved creatively behind the scenes while also feeling emotionally attached to the story has been a rewarding experience. She said the journey taught her something new every day and called the show a fresh chapter in her career.
Blending food, emotions and opposing worldviews, ‘Ishk Dum Aur Idli Rasam’ attempts to present a refreshing take on love, family and emotional inheritance while expanding Balaji Studios’ growing digital content lineup.
