Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has spoken about the responsibility of portraying one of India’s most respected industrial icons, JRD Tata, in ‘Made in India – A Titan Story’, the recently released period drama on Amazon MX Player. As the six-part series continues to receive appreciation from viewers and critics, Shah’s performance has emerged as one of the most talked-about aspects of the show, earning praise for its restraint, authenticity and emotional depth.

According to an Amazon MX Player press release, Shah’s portrayal of Tata has resonated strongly with audiences, adding gravitas to a story that chronicles the journey behind one of India’s most iconic brands.

The series has been lauded for bringing together compelling storytelling with strong performances, and Shah’s nuanced interpretation of the legendary industrialist has played a key role in its reception.

Reflecting on stepping into the shoes of J.R.D. Tata, Shah said it was not merely the business leader’s stature that fascinated him, but the humility and restraint with which he carried his achievements. The actor described the experience as both challenging and rewarding, given the immense legacy associated with the Tata name.

“J.R.D. Tata was singular in a way that is difficult to articulate. What fascinated me most was not his stature but his restraint; he carried his greatness quietly, almost as a matter of habit,” Shah said.

The acclaimed actor added that despite playing numerous characters over the course of his career, portraying J.R.D. Tata came with a unique sense of responsibility because of the respect and admiration the industrialist continues to command across generations.

“I have played many characters over the years, but portraying J.R.D. came with a huge sense of responsibility because of the legacy he represents. I am delighted that Made in India – A Titan Story gave me the opportunity to explore him,” he said.

Shah also spoke warmly about working alongside actor Jim Sarbh, who plays a pivotal role in the series. Praising Sarbh’s approach to performance, he highlighted the actor’s ability to listen and engage deeply with his co-stars, qualities he believes are increasingly rare and invaluable on screen.

“Jim has something that cannot be manufactured, he listens. Genuinely, completely. On camera, that is rarer than it sounds,” Shah remarked.

He further credited Sarbh’s theatre background for bringing discipline and intellectual depth to his performances, adding that working with him was always a rewarding experience.

Since its release, ‘Made in India – A Titan Story’ has generated significant interest for its exploration of entrepreneurship, innovation and the people behind the rise of one of India’s most recognised brands. Combining historical context with personal stories, the series offers viewers a glimpse into the vision, ambition and values that helped shape an enduring legacy.
