Prime Video has officially announced that its breakout original series ‘Matka King’ will return for a second season after the show delivered a strong global performance following its release last month. Set in the world of 1960s Bombay, the crime drama struck a chord with audiences through its story of ambition, power and survival, becoming one of the platform’s most talked-about Indian originals in recent years.
According to a Prime Video press release, ‘Matka King’ Season 1 emerged as the most-watched new scripted series on the service in the last two years. The series trended in the Top 10 across 37 countries and ranked No.1 in 17 countries during its launch week, underlining the growing international appetite for rooted Indian stories with strong local flavour and global appeal.
Created and written by Abhay Koranne and created, written and directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, the series brought alive the rise of the Matka gambling empire in Bombay through a gritty and emotionally layered narrative. The show was produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashwini Sidwani and Ashish Aryan under the banners of Roy Kapur Films, Aatpat and SMR Entertainment.
The first season featured Vijay Varma in the lead role of Brij Bhatti, supported by Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat and Gulshan Grover. The ensemble cast also included Bharat Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Jamie Lever, Kishor Kadam, Cyrus Sahukar, Arpita Sethiya, Sambhaji Tangade, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjivv Jotangia and Simran Ashwini.
Released on April 17, the eight-episode series quickly built momentum through strong word-of-mouth, with viewers praising its storytelling, performances and immersive recreation of old Bombay. Industry observers have noted that the success of ‘Matka King’ further reflects the growing demand for large-scale Indian originals that blend crime, drama and period storytelling with culturally rooted narratives.
Prime Video, while confirming the development of Season 2, hinted that the story of Brij Bhatti is far from over. The streaming platform said the next season will raise the stakes further as the game surrounding the Matka empire expands.
With the second season now in development, ‘Matka King’ joins the growing list of Indian streaming franchises that have managed to build both domestic popularity and international traction, strengthening Prime Video’s original content slate globally.
