Marking a historic milestone in the world of natural history storytelling, Sony BBC Earth is set to celebrate the 100th birthday of David Attenborough with the exclusive premiere of ‘Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure’ on May 8.
The initiative, announced in a Sony BBC Earth press release yesterday, includes a specially curated ‘100 Days Tribute’ showcasing some of Attenborough’s most iconic works over the decades. The programming will culminate in the one-hour behind-the-scenes special, scheduled to air at 12 pm and 9 pm, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the making of ‘Life on Earth’, the groundbreaking series that transformed wildlife filmmaking.
The special revisits the extraordinary journey behind ‘Life on Earth’, first broadcast in 1979 and watched by over 500 million viewers worldwide. It highlights the scale, ambition, and challenges faced by the crew, from filming in politically volatile regions like Comoros and Rwanda to navigating risks in Iraq at a time when global travel and colour television were still evolving. The series went on to become a defining moment in factual storytelling, cementing Attenborough’s legacy as one of the most influential wildlife filmmakers of all time.
One of the most memorable moments from the original series —Attenborough’s close encounter with gorillas in the mountains of Rwanda — continues to be regarded as one of television’s greatest sequences. Reflecting on the journey in the special, Attenborough describes ‘Life on Earth’ as a turning point in his career, calling it the most ambitious natural history project ever undertaken and the first truly global series of its kind filmed entirely in colour.
The programme features exclusive interviews with Attenborough and members of the original crew, capturing both the creative vision and the risks that shaped the landmark production. It is executive produced by Mike Davis, with Sue Aartse-Tuyn serving as Production Executive and Victoria Bobin as Producer-Director.
Over the years, Sony BBC Earth has brought Indian audiences several of Attenborough’s acclaimed works, including ‘Planet Earth’, ‘Blue Planet II’, ‘Frozen Planet’, ‘The Hunt’, ‘Dynasties’, and ‘Life’, reinforcing its position as a destination for premium factual content.
With this special premiere, the channel not only celebrates a century of Attenborough’s life but also honours a legacy that has profoundly influenced how the world understands and connects with nature.
