Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called for urgent reforms in the global governance framework, stronger India–Brazil economic ties and decisive action against inequality, while outlining his views on world conflicts, social media regulation and environmental protection in an exclusive interview with India Today TV.
According to a press note, the wide-ranging conversation touched on issues including reform of the United Nations Security Council, global wars, relations with world leaders, climate action and his personal philosophy, offering insight into Brazil’s strategic priorities and Lula’s vision for global cooperation.
On global conflicts and the United Nations, Lula stressed the urgent need for reform of the Security Council, pointing out that countries engaged in wars — including the United States and Russia — are among its permanent members. He questioned the absence of permanent representation for nations such as India, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Egypt, Indonesia and African countries, arguing that the current structure no longer reflects contemporary geopolitical realities.
The Brazilian leader also spoke about his political rival Jair Bolsonaro, stating that Bolsonaro had been convicted and sentenced to more than 27 years in prison and alleging that a plot to assassinate him and his vice president had been documented with evidence. Commenting on former US President Donald Trump and his proximity to Bolsonaro, Lula said his focus remains on maintaining a democratic and respectful relationship between Brazil and the United States rather than individual political equations.
Describing Trump as an expert in marketing and social media who “runs it like a TV show,” Lula added that the former US president presents a calmer personality in personal meetings. Referring to their age, Lula remarked that both leaders, approaching 80, should serve as role models rather than engage in conflict, emphasising cooperation between major democracies.
On economic policy and natural resources, Lula asserted that Brazil would not hand over its critical minerals without ensuring domestic processing and value creation. He emphasised that Brazil would decide its trade partnerships independently and would not accept external impositions. The president also said he had formally proposed cooperation with Trump on combating drug trafficking, including sending Brazilian criminals residing in the United States back to Brazil to face trial.
Lula described combating violence against women as a personal priority, urging religious leaders, community figures and trade unions to speak out on the issue. He emphasised that women in the 21st century demand equality, respect and participation in political life. Addressing broader social concerns, he said his “war” was against economic, racial and gender inequality, highlighting that global military spending far exceeds what would be required to end world hunger.
The president also took a strong position on social media, arguing that many platforms lack genuine social engagement and defending regulatory measures. He pointed to Brazil’s decision to ban mobile phones in schools, saying the move had encouraged children to interact more and engage in physical activities.
On environmental policy, Lula said Brazil had reduced deforestation in the Amazon by more than 50 per cent during his current term and reiterated his commitment to achieving zero deforestation by 2030. He also highlighted the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund, describing it as an investment model rather than a donation-based initiative.
Focusing on bilateral relations, Lula expressed optimism about India–Brazil ties, stating his intention to expand trade between the two countries from $15 billion to $30–40 billion. He said he hopes both nations will emerge as major economic powers in the coming years.
Reflecting on his personal philosophy, Lula cited Mahatma Gandhi as a lifelong inspiration, praising his use of non-violence and example in leading a nation to independence. He added that having a purpose keeps one young, noting his daily routine of waking early for exercise and maintaining the same enthusiasm for public life he had in his youth.
The interview offered a comprehensive view of Lula’s policy priorities and ideological outlook, highlighting Brazil’s ambitions on the global stage as well as its commitment to social justice, environmental sustainability and deeper international partnerships.
